QI (Quality improvement in Health Care)
Baseline Assessment of District and below level Hospitals for Introducing Quality Improvement System in Maternal and Neonatal Health Services
CIPRB, with the technical support from WHO Bangladesh, conducted a baseline assessment in November -December 2011 in District Hospitals, Maternal and Child Welfare Centers (MCWCs) and Upazila Health Complexes (UHCs) of two districts in Bangladesh: Jamalpur and Thakurgaon with the aim to develop and implement a “Quality Improvement (QI) System for MNH services”.
The findings revealed that the facilities surveyed were reasonably adequate in providing maternal and neonatal care with challenges like inadequacy in human resources, logistics and supplies, maintenance of equipment and waste management systems. Existing record keeping and clinical documentation needs to be improved. However, the perceptions of providers and staff strongly suggested the need for a structured quality improvement system to be implemented immediately to improve maternal and neonatal care. CIPRB is currently working in development of the QI process, standards, guidelines and tools that can be utilized and finalized through a proposed pilot QI system in the two MNHI districts with technical support from WHO Bangladesh.
