Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) in collaboration with Safe Crossings are implementing “Road Safety Demonstration Project: Speed management and Safe Crossings on N2 Highway” in Bangladesh.
As an integrated part of the project as well as community involvement, Road Safety Committee (RSC) was formed in July 2014 under projects ACE part. Key community influentials like local government representative, school teacher(s), member of local market committee, religious leader, member of local CNG drivers association, crashes data record keepers are included in the RSC. Since October 2014, eight meetings were held in the three project areas.
On 23rd October 2014, RSC meeting was held at Mahmudabad Namapara, under Raipura upazila of Narsingdi district. Mr. Jasper Vet, Founder Safe-Crossings, Siemon van den Berg, Member, Safe Crossings, Dr. Kamran Ul Baset, Senior Scientist, CIPRB attended the meeting. With all the members (11) of RSC Mr. Kazi Burhan Uddin (ACE Manager), Road Safety project, conducted the meeting.
Dr. Kamran facilitates the meeting while Mr. Jasper and Kazi Burhan Uddin updated the project activities. Mrs. Shampa Begum, President of RSC expressed that “attending the meeting I, myself become aware and come to know road safety behaviour. I will try to make aware my neighbourhood on road safety issue through discussion.”
RSC members will act as model for the other community people. Committee are playing vital role to creating local ownership to the stakeholders, which will make the project success and sustainable.
