On 2nd December 2014, the visiting DFATD Team consisting of Ms. Meaghan Bayers, First Secretary (Development) and Mr. Joseph Sebhatu, First Secretary (Development) of High Commission of Canada in Bangladesh observed a Verbal Autopsy of a neonatal death in Jhargaon Village of Akhanagar Union under Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.
During the Autopsy conducted by Md. Golam Mostafa, Family Planning Inspector of Thakurgaon, the mother mentioned that after 36 weeks of pregnancy, on 31st October she developed labor pain and had home delivery with the attendance of one of her relatives along with the traditional birth attendant. The relative, who attended the mother during delivery stated that the mother delivered the legs of the neonate first and then the rest of the body and it was a girl. She also mentioned that the neonate had the umbilical cord twisted around her neck. The birth time of the neonate was around 21.30. Immediately after delivery, the newborn girl had less movement and developed respiratory distress. Seeing the fatal condition of the neonate, the family decided to take her to hospital. But she died on the same day at about 21.40 before taking her to the hospital.
The visiting team expressed their deepest condolence to the deceased family for the unexpected death and urged the mother for facility delivery in her next pregnancy, of which she and her husband strongly agreed. The Team expressed their satisfaction after observing the autopsy and took a short interview of the mother of the deceased newborn.
Dr Sanchoy Kumar Chanda, Senior Technical Officer of UNFPA;Dr. Zahid Hasan of UNICEF;Md. Shamsuzzaman, Field District Officer of MNHI; Dr. Mridul Kanti Ghosh, Deputy Team Leader of MPDR, CIPRB and other CIPRB officials were present during the verbal autopsy.
